Contributions to Management Thought & Social Discourse / Indian Ethos in Management / Indian Management / New Age Management / Indian Management Thought
by
Dr. Subhash Sharma

A) BOOKS:

  1. Management in New Age: Western Windows Eastern Doors, Sharma, Subhash, New Age International Publishers, New Delhi, 1996: This book provides a synthesis of the Western and the Eastern theories and concepts of management with a view to create unique institutions and business organizations in the emerging competitive market place. Since, in the new market context businesses and institutions are made on the basis of ideas competing at the market place, the need for developing new ideas is most critical for a country like India to become not only a growing economy but also a significant player in the market place. India enjoys a unique advantage because of its long history, experience and onward journey. The conceptualization of the experience of its institutions and business organizations provides us with new ideas and perspectives. The subtitle of the book crystallizes the essence of the Indian experience and its conceptualization in the context of modern corporate organizations both in the business as well as in development field.

This book has been extensively reviewed and has been considered by eminent management scholars as creative and original contribution to the development of the Indian management thought.

  2. Quantum Rope: Science, Mysticism & Management, Sharma, Subhash, New Age International Publishers, New Delhi, 1999: Science deals with exploration of matter, mysticism with exploration of that which explores the matter. One deals with the ‘reality out there’ the other with search within. The two complement each other to improve the material and spiritual conditions of humanity. In ‘Quantum Rope’ this complementarity is presented through a synthesis of Western scientific world-views and Eastern ‘re’-see (Rishi) visions. As both science and mysticism have implications for day to day existence, they also influence management theory and practice. The book traces such influences through new age corporate voices emanating from corporate corridors.

Extensively reviewed, the book has been considered as an "unusual book on management" and a "source of inspiration" for lateral thinking in management techniques.

  3. Arrows of Time: From The Blackholes To The Nirvana Point, Sharma, Subhash, New Age International Publishers, New Delhi, 2001: The book suggests an evolutionary model for the evolution of human thought system in terms of religions, science and spirituality. It also suggests a convergence framework for confluence of these thought systems. The metaphor of 'arrows of time' is used to develop the idea of 'arrows of development' in terms of a holistic view of development influenced by religions, science and spirituality.

B) PAPERS:

Following provides the abstracts / highlights of the contributions to the Indian Management thought.

  • Subhash Sharma. 'Managerial Discretion and Organizational Slack: A Commentary'. Vikalpa. Vol.16, No.2, April-June 1991, pp.33-40: The central focus of this paper is to analyze some important theoretical frameworks for understanding the phenomenon of managerial discretionary behaviour. The study suggests that the political-economy framework is useful in gaining insights into the modalities of managerial discretionary behaviour. Author further tries to decipher the implications of managerial discretion for explaining organizational slack.
  • Subhash Sharma. 'New Age Management'. AMA (Ahmedabad Management Association) News. Vol.19, No.8, August 1991, pp.2-3: We live in an age in which there is a failure of 'isms' or serious doubts have been raised about them. Accordingly, paper suggests the need for new theories and concepts of management in the new age. Paper presents a discussion on OSHA model, Theory K and Indianism as foundation for development of Indian concepts in management. These models were subsequently elaborated in author's book, Management in New Age: Western Windows Eastern Doors (1996) as well as in journal articles.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘Institution Building & Institutional Regeneration: Frameworks for Action’, Indian Journal of Training & Development, March - April 1992, pp.10-22: This paper reviews the models of management education in India and outlines the critical factors in institution building. It also presents some models of institution building. Important aspects of institution building include clarity of mission and agenda setting, identification of strategic thrust areas, independence in operations, network building and task accomplishing.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘Decision Styles: Conceptual Models and an Empirical Study of IAS Officers’, Indian Journal of Public Administration, Vol.XXXVII, No.2, April - June 1992, pp.95-108: This paper presents a review of various existing conceptual frameworks to study the decision styles of administrators and managers. These frameworks are compared with Rowe's decision style model. A group of IAS officers with several years of experience was administered Rowe's decision style inventory. Empirical results based on this point to the presence of four types of bureaucrats in Indian bureaucracy viz. Behavioural Types, Analytical Types, Conceptual Types and Bureaucratic - Procedural Types.
  • Subhash Sharma. 'Management Mantras'. AMA (Ahmedabad Management Association) News. Vol.20, No.6, June 1992, pp.5-6: Mantras can be defined as codified and condensed expressions that convey philosophical and conceptual ideas. Mantras have a considerable practical utility as they can communicate complex ideas in nutshell. Paper presents a discussion on author's various management mantras such as OSHA model, 'MBA' model of decision making, 'MAP' (Manas-Anna-Prana), Indianism as Infinity & Diversity in Absolute. These models found their subsequent expansion in author's book Management in New Age: Western Windows Eastern Doors (1996) and several journal articles.
  • Sharma, Subhash & Singhal, Arvind, ‘Modern Management Theories: Promise or Peril?’, Indian Journal of Public Administration, Vol.39, No.1, January - March 1993, pp.20-28: This paper provides a taxonomy to classify the existing management theories and analyses their normatic contents. It discovers that the emphasis of many modern management theories is on the 'animalistic' aspect of human nature. An alternative post-modern system emphasizing humanistic values is suggested and it is argued that management practice should be based on theories that promote humanistic values. Paper also presents a 'WEPT' (Wealth, Ethics, Pleasure, Transcendence) model with a view to seek a harmonic balance between the four components of WEPT so as to avoid mal-development of societies.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘Inspirational Motivation: A New Framework of Motivation’, in Ancient Indian Wisdom for Motivation, Ahmedabad Management Association, 1993, pp.95-109: This paper presents the concept of inspirational motivation as well as alternative theory of 'basket of needs' to Maslow's theory of hierarchy of needs'. It suggests that the concept of basket of needs takes out the hierarchy bias inherent in Maslow's conceptualization. Implicit in basket of needs concept is the greater autonomy in individuals. Drawing upon the Indian Panchkosha theory, this paper conceptualizes the inspirational motivation as an impulse that can pierce through the various koshas and thereby release our latent energy.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘Management Ideas in Arthasastra’, Indian Journal of Public Administration, Vol.40, No.2, April - June 1994, pp.165-182: Hailed as one of the most influential and important books on the art of statecraft and public administration, most commentaries on Arthasastra highlight its political, diplomatic and administrative insights. Exploring it from management ideas viewpoint, this paper finds it as a source book for a number of ideas in management and administration. This paper translates in contemporary language, relevant ideas from the Arthasastra and presents them in an analytical format understandable to contemporary managers. Through such illustrations it also suggests that for all practical purposes, Arthasastra can be considered a foundational book for managers and leaders.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘Western Windows Eastern Doors: Frameworks for Self-Development’, in 'Ancient Indian Wisdom for Self-Development', Ahmedabad Management Association, Ahmedabad and Sankara Vidya Kendra, New Delhi, June 1995, pp.20-31: Combining the Eastern and Western strands of thought, this paper presents a number of frameworks for self development. It presents the concept of Human Quality Grid to understand various management styles and a negergy - synergy grid as an analytical framework to the use of power in organizations. An Eastern 'T-A' (Thought - Action) framework is presented to understand the nature of managerial actions in organizations. A class - character framework is presented in its two dimensional perspective. Paper also highlights the characteristics of negative energy or negergy generators and synergy generators in organizations.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘Towards Enlightened Leadership: Framework for Leadership and Management’, in 'Evolving Performing Organizations Through People: A Global Agenda', edited by Prof. K.B.Akhilesh, et. al., New Age International Publishers, 1995, pp.209-214: This paper presents a four steps model of the enlightened leadership. Outlining the differences between a robot, a manager, a leaders and an enlightened leader, it points to the need for development of enlightened leadership in the organizational context. Enlightened leaders is visualized as a person who is driven by HOPE - Higher Order Purpose of Existence. Through vision and enlightenment such a person is able to see the sea changes and through devotion and action the person is able to effectively deal with the changing situations and crisis.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘OSHA Model for Relationship Management’, Abhigyan, Spring 1995, pp.29-40: This paper presents the OSHA model as a general theory of human relationship management, OSHA summarizes the preferred order of the three gunas viz., the sattavik, rajasik and tamasik. OSHA as a short form of Om Shanti reveals a complete model of human being in terms of Oneness, Spiritualistic, Humanistic and Animalistic tendencies. The OSHA interaction matrix presented in this paper can be used as an analytical and diagnostic framework for improvement of individual, team and organizational effectiveness. It is suggested that OSHA model can be used as a framework for reconciling the 'man' with 'man', 'man' with nature, market with nature and 'man' and market with society.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘Total Quality Of Management (TQOM): An Endological Basis for Human Values in Corporate Management’, Abhigyan, Summer 1996, pp.35-39: In this paper, concept of Total Quality of Management (TQOM) with its endological roots in human values and business ethics has been proposed. Endology implies a study of end values and a study of means and ends as guiding principles for human actions. Hence, endological analysis implies an analysis of both means and ends as well as their effects on individual, society and organisations. An endo-analytic approach means an analysis of end values from the viewpoint of consequence effects. Because of its emphasis on positive values, endology provides a foundational premise for positive actions and positive management, thereby contributing to improvement in Total Quality Of Management (TQOM).
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘Towards New Innovations in Management Education’, in 'Management Education: Strategic Issues', in Conference Proceedings of the AIMS Eighth Annual Convention, Madras, August 1996, pp.56-60: Management education in India has made rapid strides during the recent years. This paper describes four new recent innovations in institution building based on a fresh and new thinking wherein the Western and Indian Management styles find a new fusion. These innovations include the Indian Institute of Plantation Management (IIPM), Women's Institute for Studies in Development Oriented Management (WISDOM), National Institute for Co-operative Management (NICM) and Vivekananda Centre for Indian Management (VCIM).
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘Forward Engineering of Public Institutions in Market Economy’, Indian Journal of Public Administration, Vol.XLII, No.4, October - December 1996, pp.633-641: This paper proposes the concept of forward engineering as an envisioning process incorporating the idea of 'reversing the arrow of time'. It implies channelizing the collective intuitional wisdom. Paper suggests the technique of mind pooling for carrying out an exercise of forward engineering. Forward engineering involves creative envisioning and creative combination of the various parts of the whole like combining the broken pieces of the cup to arrive at a new art object. Paper presents a number of tools and techniques that can help in formulating a forward engineering plan for an organization.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘CINE Matrix: A Framework for Strategic Scanning’, The Planters' Chronicle, Vol.92, No.3, March 1997, pp.133-138: CINE matrix is a conceptual framework for analysis of factors influencing a decision situation. Through classification of factors in the form of C-I-N-E factors, a better understanding of the situation emerges in the form of nature of actions required for self-empowerment. In CINE matrix, the letters C, I, N and E stand for the following; C: Controllable, I: Internal, N: Non-controllable, E: External. When this information is presented in a matrix form, we get a better picture of the decision situation.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘Towards an Omnijective Theory for New Organizational Development’, Chinmaya Management Review, Vol.1, No.1, December 1997, pp.12-18: This paper presents a new approach to Organisation Development wherein an omnijective route to organisation development is suggested. Modernisation, humanisation and spiritualization of work places is emerging as a new paradigm to make work places conflict free and harmonic. Paper suggests that insights from Eastern philosophies could provide a foundational basis for developing a new organization development theory that would take a holistic view of the objective and subjective aspects in organisation development.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘From Self - Actualization to SELF - Realization: Beyond the Selfish - Gene Syndrome’, Abhigyan, Vol.XV, No.4, 1997, pp.59-63: This paper highlights the subtle differences between the self-actualisation and self-realisation. It presents a four step model of self-development combining the Western and Eastern approaches. The paper suggests the need to move beyond the selfish gene syndrome so that the corporate organisations become more eco-sensitive. It suggests that ‘enlightened collective interest’ represent the key towards developing enlightened corporate organisations for achieving holistic social and economic development.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘Enlightened Leadership in Indian Ethos: The Way of the Theory K’, Management & Change, Vol.2, No.1, January - June 1998, pp.93-104: This paper elaborates the idea of theory K in the form of a combination approach to theories X, Y & Z. The metaphor of organization as a family constitutes the keynote of this combination approach which can be mathematically represented as K = XaYbZc wherein co-efficients a, b and c indicate the intensity with which managers tend to use X, Y or Z style. Driving metaphor is suggested to indicate the matrix nature of the theory K wherein the attempt is to achieve proper matching between the managerial styles and situational requirements. Paper further presents an Indian model of enlightened leadership.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘Social Discourse in a Globalized Era: Towards the Concept of Development Matrix’, Indian Journal of Public Administration, Vol.XLIV, No.3, July - September 1998, pp.328-338: In this paper, author argues for adoption of a development matrix as the basis for social discourse in a globalized era for a better understanding of the role of State. Conceptualising development matrix through an analysis of human activities in terms of their market and non-market contexts and modes of organisation in terms of corporate and non-corporate structures, the author presents his Vishwa model and the idea of Vishwanization as a new construct to meet challenges of globalisation. Admitting criticality of cultural setting and its diversity in a holistic developmental view of a society, he conceptualises Indian society as a matrix society, and suggests a paradigm shift from dialectical analysis of a society towards a matrix analysis. He also proposes the idea of dialectical intensity as a basis to understand complexity of a matrix society.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘From Factors of Production to Factors of Creation: 'Best' Model as a Strategic Management Framework’, Abhigyan, Vol.XVI, No.4, October - December 1998, pp.43-47: This article presents the idea of the ‘BEST’ factors and their inter-play in the market context. Paper suggests a paradigm change from the ‘factors of production’ to ‘factors of creation’ and indicates that ‘BEST’ factors should be viewed in terms of factors of creation and value addition. Paper highlights the importance of ‘BEST’ model as a strategic management framework. It also suggests that organizations being socio-cultural systems, proper cultural climate is required for proper co-alignment and coalescing of the ‘BEST’ factors in organizational context.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'New Age Management for Competitive Advantage: The Metaphors of India Blend, Indica and Indian Management', Management & Change, Vol.3, No.1, January-June 1999, pp.1-14: This paper presents a four-way classification framework identifying the foundations of management theories and concepts. It further develops the idea of Indian management by providing illustrative Indian ideas in management. The paper highlights the emergence of 'India blend' and 'Indica' as new metaphors of Indian management in a new age of liberalization and globalization. As an illustration, the paper also draws upon an idea from the Arthashastra that has a lot of relevance in the field of strategic management. It argues that the future of Indian management as a distinct field of study would depend on the capacity of Indian managers to unleash Indian creativity. The idea of anti-benchmarking could help us in this direction.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘Corporate Gita: Lessons for Management, Administration and Leadership’, Journal of Human Values, Vol.5, No.2, July-December 1999, pp.103-123: This paper expands the model of a 'sacro-civic' society, drawing upon psycho-philosophical insights of the Gita. Four major management themes of common interest in the East and the West have been selected. Then the relevant verses of the Gita have been used to elaborate on their respective deeper imports. These four broad themes have later again been decomposed into 20 specific sub-themes, and verses connected with each of them are presented. The author offers simple rhymed English translations of these verses using some of the well-known renderings of earlier masters of the Gita. The reader is invited to reflect upon and assimilate the spirit of these verses for application in the field of daily management practice and in the wider arena of social reconstruction.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Sharpening and Strengthening Knowledge Competence of Corporates: Knowledge Management in Enterprise Context', Decision, Vol.2, Nos.1-4, January-December 1999, pp.147-162: This paper seeks to provide some conceptual frameworks to understand the process involved in knowledge creation and development. It also seeks to provide the application of these ideas to enterprise level for enhancing enterprise competitiveness. Paper suggests a knowledge generation matrix and the framework of 'wisdom equation' as a basis for new knowledge generation.
  • Sharma, Subhash, ‘India As a Matrix Society: Complexities of Managing in a New Age’, in 'Human Resource Development: A Value Based Approach', edited by B.R.Madan, et.al., Pointer Publishers, Jaipur, 1999, pp.95-100: This paper presents the idea of Indian society as a matrix society, wherein the issues of rural urban development need to be viewed keeping in view the matrix nature of Indian context. Paper suggests a paradigm shift from dialectical analysis to matrix analysis of developmental issues. The matrix nature of Indian society makes the management more difficult.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Training and Education for Transformation: Experience of The Reach Out Model', in 'Training for Transformation: Strategies for the New Millennium', edited by Y.K.Bhushan, et.al., Himanshu Publications, New Delhi, Janaury 2000, pp.150-156: The concept of reach-out model developed at Indian Institute of Plantation Management, Bangalore, is an indigenous innovation in institution building. On-site education is the key idea in reach-out model. Indeed the reach-out model has been widely practised in the Indian social context e.g. the 'wandering out' by 'wandering monks' of India such as Shankara, Baba Budan, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi. However in institutional context, particularly in management education, this concept has not been extensively applied. The reach-out model offers several advantages. The key aspects of the reach-out model are on-site education, ground praxis, action based research, reducing theory-practice gap, enhanced interaction between the industry and the academia and lower investment in infrastructure. In essence, the reach- out model can be metaphorically captured through the idea of 'guru going to the shishya' which is a reversal of the traditional concept of 'shishya going to the guru'.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Wisdom Matrix in Corporate Management: Generating the LIFO Response', The Social Engineer, Vol.9, No.1, January 2000, pp.88-94: Wisdom matrix can also be used in training situations to sensitize people about the LIFO process. As a sensitivity tool, it can be used in a group discussion to create group awareness about the nature of social relationships. Further, it also helps in improving the self-confidence and self worth of individuals, involved in a liberation struggle. Author has tested the idea of wisdom matrix in class-room situations by asking groups of MBA students to identify various oppressor-oppressed relationships within the framework of wisdom matrix and provide solutions for the LIFO process. It has been the experience that discussions enhance the sensitivity of the students to the gender issues in the society and organizations. Thus, wisdom matrix turns out to be an analytical and sensitizing tool for initiating social change through appropriate liberation response. Therein lies its practical significance.
  • Sharma, Subhash 'Knowledge Creation, Knowledge Building and Creative Motive: Towards A Typology of Academic Contributions', in 'Advantage South Asia: Opportunities and Challenges for Management Development', edited by Dharni P Sinha, et.al., AMDISA, Hyderabad, March 2000, pp.29-39: Knowledge creation and knowledge building is fundamental to the academic enterprise. It is essentially driven by creative motive. Hence, an understanding of the knowledge generation process is essential to evaluation of academic contributions. In this paper a typology of academic contributions through the framework of ‘hierarchy of writings’ is presented. This framework provides us a better understanding of the categorization of academic contributions and also provides us a basis for understanding the process of intellectual property creation.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'New Age Management for Corporate Development', Management Perception, Vol.1, No.1, January-June 2000, pp.49-50: India has a rich heritage of management ideas. However, this was not recognized in academic literature which till recently was dominated by Western models. As a result the concept of 'Indian Management' remained illusive for quite some time, However, with conceptualization of the Indian experience of building world class organizations as well as emergence of the 'Indian model', this idea is taking a concrete shape. In new age management, we draw upon these ideas and combine them with the Western and Japanese ideas on management to arrive at a new creative synthesis. For Indian National Corporates (INCs) to acquire a competitive advantage the following five principles provide a new foundational premise; 1) Strengthening the strength; 2) Convert local into global; 3) Create competition rather than merely face competition; 4) Become the 'Best'; and 5) Acknowledge the unacknowledged workers.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Total Resources Management (TRM): A Holistic Approach to Strategic Gearing', Sankalpa, Vol.8, No.1, January-June 2000, pp.81-94: Total Resources Management (TRM) focuses on all the resource that managers have to manage. Its essence lies in integrating the other ideals which claim to be "total" in their approach. Application of 'TRM' approach with its tools and new age management techniques would ensure survival and growth of an enterprise or industry in the wake of global competition. It can also help policy-makers and key decision makers in focusing their attention to critical action areas and integrate them with other approaches like 'forward engineering' to meet the new challenges.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Knowledge Management in Enterprises: Knowledge Generation Windows and the TASK Model', in Proceedings of 'Management Paradigms in the E-Millennium' AIMS Twelfth Convention, at Bangalore, August 27-29, 2000: With the advent of the new economy, a new paradigm of management is emerging. While the concept of Total Quality Management (TQM) belonged to the brick and mortar economy the idea of Total Knowledge Management (TKM) belongs to the new economy'. A transition from TQM to TKM has already occurred. The focus of new age management thinking is on knowledge, knowledge leadership and knowledge workers. Indeed, a new typology of workers is emerging wherein workers are categorized as knowledge workers, acknowledged workers and unacknowledged workers. Total Knowledge Leadership (TKL) implies converting the unacknowledged workers into the knowledge workers and thereby gaining competitive advantage. This paper focuses on the idea of knowledge generation windows that can provide us a peep into the knowledge generation processes.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Total Knowledge Management (TKM): Enhancing Competitiveness Through Knowledge Management Systems', Journal of Scientific & Industrial Research, Vol.59, August-September 2000, pp.673-682: When we talk of 'Total Knowledge Management', we are looking at the management of knowledge at the self, society and enterprise level. It may be indicated that in the Western idiom, total knowledge has a restricted meaning in terms of only two components viz, codified knowledge and tacit knowledge. Total knowledge is a combination of the 'explicit' and the 'tacit'. Accordingly the idea of 'Total Knowledge Management' deals with managing the 'Total Knowledge' comprising the explicit and tacit knowledge. In the knowledge economy the competitive advantage of enterprises depends upon its Total Knowledge Management Systems and linking it up with strategic architecture. We provide some conceptual frameworks to understand the processes involved in knowledge creation and development. Application of these ideas at the enterprise level to enhance enterprise competitiveness is then explored. Implications for the academic in its role in knowledge creation and development have also been discussed.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Development Matrix for Good Governance', Southern Economist, Vol.39, No.10, September 2000, pp.9-12: In this paper, author discusses three inter-related ideas for good governance. Accordingly, the paper is divided into three parts. In part-I author presents the idea of development matrix. In part-II he presents the concept of NBUs i.e. Nation's Business Units. The idea of NBUs is derived from the concept of SBUs (Strategic Business Units) widely used in business. In part-III he presents the concept of character-competence of the corporation as a basis for good governance. Further, he extends this concept to the various cells of the development matrix and to the nation's business units to ensure overall good governance.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Enterprise Performance Improvement Systems (EPIS): Value Chain Matrix and Forward Engineering Tools for Performance Improvement', Sankalpa, Vol.8, No.2, July-December 2000, pp.34-54: This paper suggests the idea of Value Chain Matrix (VCM) by drawing upon Porter's Value Chain concept. An integration of the concept of VCM with the management control system concepts and 'forward engineering' tools is also suggested leading to an Enterprise Performance Improvement (EPI) framework. Accordingly, this paper is divided in three parts in addition to introduction and conclusion. In part-I, we elaborate the concept of value chain matrix. In part-II, we provide 'forward engineering' tools for designing Enterprise Performance Improvement Systems (EPIS). In part-III we present an Enterprise Performance Improvement (EPI) framework in the form of EPIS model, that managers can use for quantum increases in performance of their enterprises, business units, responsibility areas and responsibility centres.
  • Sharma, Subhash 'New Horizons in Management Thinking: Towards Net Age Management Ideas', Management Perception, Vol.2, No.2, July-December 2000, pp.28-32: During recent years management thought has been undergoing a radical change. A number of factors have led to expansion of new horizons in management thinking. The arrival of the 'new economy', indigenous responses to the forces of globalization, the shift from the male centric theories to the holistic concepts and several other changes have forced management thinkers to conceptualize new experiences in new metaphors and new language. Indeed the modern management ideas have given way to the post-modern 'new age management' ideas. Further, with the arrival of another new era in the form of net and the jet age, the days of net - jet management ideas have also arrived. In this paper we suggest some 'net age management' ideas that point to the new horizons in management thinking.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Forward Engineering for Strategic Gearing: A Conceptual Framework', The Indian Journal of Public Administration, Vol.XLVI, No.4, October - December 2000, pp.667-674: This paper presents a conceptual framework of ‘forward engineering’ for strategic gearing of organizations. This framework is rooted in the R + C i.e. Rationality + Creativity, paradigm for gearing organizations for competitive challenges. By ‘forward engineering’ author implies creative, proactive and responsive actions in the context of continuously changing competitive environment. The conceptual framework presented in this paper, is based on some new analytical tools that managers and administrators would find useful in gearing up for global competition in the context of liberalization and globalisation. Author also presents illustrations of analytical tools of forward - engineering from Indian Tea industry.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'HRD Matrix for Nation's Competitive Advantage', Key Note in Conference Proceedings of the National Symposium on Agenda for HRD Professionals in New Millennium, organized by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Business Management, Faculty of Management Studies, Ujjain, February 16-17, 2001: A nation's competitive advantage depends upon the quality of its human resources. It is also linked to the full spectrum of human and business activities of the nation. A nation's business units (NBUs) constitute the founding blocks for the competitive advantage of a nation. HRD matrix suggested in this paper takes into consideration the development needs of a nation rooted in a full spectrum approach to development. Accordingly this paper is divided in three parts. In part-I, the idea of development matrix as a basis for the HRD matrix for the nation is presented. In part-II, the concept of development wheel and the NBUs i.e. Nation's Business Units is discussed. The idea of NBUs is derived from the concept of SBUs (Strategic Business Units) widely used in business. In part-III, a holistic model for nation's competitive advantage through the concept of 'viswa' model and place the HRD agenda within its context is provided.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'From Mind Colonization to Mind Liberation and Beyond: Unleashing Creativity and Creative Potential, Southern Economist, Vol.40, No.1, May 2001, pp.37-39: We have entered a new era viz. era of knowledge economy. Only a liberated mind is capable of providing fresh thinking, as it is not bound by the paradigms of others. Opportunity to liberate the Indian mind from the mind colonizing influences is knocking at our doors. In this paper, an analytical framework to understand the processes involved in overcoming the mind colonization, are provided. The processes could be in three phases viz., Mind colonization, Mind liberation and Mind extension. Author suggests that If we make use of the opportunity we can once again become net contributors to knowledge creation and regain the knowledge leadership that India once provided through its immense 'scientific creativity' and 'cultural creativity'.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Routes to Reality: Scientific and Rishi Methodologies', Journal of Human Values, Vol.7, No.1, January-June 2001, pp.75-83: Scientific routes to understanding the nature of reality have led to the development of science and technology, which in turn has led to improvement in material conditions of humanity. In contrast, the rishi route to reality enhanced our understanding of human beings from the perspective of higher levels of consciousness. The rishi route has given us insights and ideas for improvement in the spiritual conditions of humanity. There is a need for an 'integral embrace' of the two routes. This paper presents a discussion on these two routes to reality and suggests that their integration would lead us a step further in the direction of creating sacro-civic societies by preventing alienation of human beings from their real nature.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Technological Explosions and Knowledge Management: Towards A New Competitive Advantage of Nations', Udyog Pragati, Vol.25, No.3, July-September 2001, pp.1-4: 'Knowledge Management' has emerged as a distinct theme in the corporate world of today. Earlier the competitive advantage was achieved through the cost route and the quality route. With the arrival of the knowledge era, K-factor i.e. knowledge factor has emerged as the critical factor for gaining competitive advantage at the market place. Knowledge factor also becomes an important determinant of the competitive advantage of nations. This paper explores the nature of changes that have occurred recently in facilitating a transition towards knowledge society. The change has been metaphorically captured as a movement from 'steam engines' to 'search engines'. It is argued that in knowledge economy, the competitive advantage is a function of four factors viz. knowledge, speed, quality and cost. Author also suggests that in knowledge economy, due recognition should be given to the knowledge sector in the national economy and in calculation of the GNP shares. The knowledge sector should not be clubbed with services sector. Author further suggests that in knowledge economy, "Return On Ideas" should become a new basis to evaluate the impact of innovations and "creative constructions". Accordingly, the concept of "Return On Ideas" should become the part of decision making process at the highest levels.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Managerial Approach to Sectoral Analysis: Managing in a Global Mandi', Sankalpa, Vol.IX, No.2, July-December, 2001, pp.12-23: 'Global Village' has turned into a 'global mandi'. In this 'mandi', corporates are the new 'traders'. The days of small time traders are being replaced by the days of the corporates with a 'global outlook' and 'global mind'. The metaphor of 'mandi' is critical to understanding the nature of dynamics at the market place. Economy of the global village is divided into various sectors. The traditional categorization has been in terms of agriculture, industry and services. In sectoral analysis, the focus is further sharpened in terms of the specific sub sectors such as paddy, tea, coffee, wheat, etc., as far as agriculture sector is concerned. Information technology, heavy engineering, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, etc., as far as industry is concerned. Hospitals, universities, hotels tourism, etc., as far as services are concerned. Econometric tools and techniques have been widely used for sectoral studies. While such sectoral studies provide many interesting insights for practising managers, a managerial approach to sectoral analysis is required. In this paper, a managerial perspective of sectoral analysis is taken into consideration and some analytical tools are provided for this purpose.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Indian Ethics and the Spirit of Development: The VEDA Model of Leadership and Management', Management Perception, Vol.1, No.3, July-December 2001, pp.28-33: Indian Ethics also referred to as Indian ethos is at the heart of the Indian model of development. It is in sharp contrast to the Western model of 'Protestant Ethics and Spirit of Capitalism', that is rooted in extreme individualism and has resulted in emergence of mal-developed societies. Hence, the need for a correction. While Western ethos are rooted in individualism or the primacy of self-interest, Eastern ethos favour the primacy of collective interest and altruism. What is required is a balance between the two. For translating the idea of 'Indian Ethics and the Spirit of development' in practical context, a supporting model is required. This model of leadership and management is identified as Vision, Enlightenment, Devotion and Action model.

It is important to explore the implications of this phenomenon for the development discourse in the society. To understand the nature of interaction between the corporate state and nation state, the concepts of development matrix, development wheel and Nation's Business Units (NBUs) have been presented. The issues related to social discourse, arising from the interaction between the corporate state, markets and the nation state have been raised. This paper is divided into three parts. In part I, the idea of development matrix, in part II, the concept of development wheel and the NBUs have been presented. In part III, the interactions between 'corporate state' and the 'nation state' and its implications for the society and the nation have been analyzed.

In this model, five aspects of development include the Social, Technological, Economic, Political and Spiritual development. By taking this wholistic approach, a balanced development of the society can be achieved through LPG and LPGm (Local Products in Global Markets) strategy.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Towards A Confluence of Civilizations: A Lesson from Indian Ethos and Indianity', Southern Economist, Vol.40, No.17, January 1, 2002, pp.11-14: This paper highlights the need for developing a philosophy of 'confluence of civilizations' as a counter to the Huntington's idea of 'clash of civilizations'. It argues that Indian ethos and the concept of Indianity can provide a conceptual foundation for initiating a dialogue towards confluence of civilizations rooted in the Indian idea of 'world as a family' (Vasudhaiv Kutumbhakam). The integrative approach of Indian civilization can provide some new lessons for the confluence of civilizations.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Radical Change Management (RCM): From Managing Pyramids To Managing in Chaos', Paradigm, Vol.6, No.1, January-June 2002, pp.1-9: Nature of organizations has been changing over the last fifty years. At one point of time, paradigm of pyramid provided the basis for creation and development of organizations. However, in due course a new paradigm evolved, i.e. matrix. Matrix organizations became the buzzword originating from the project management approach to creation and development of organizations. With the advent of Information Technology, a new concept and a new metaphor was evolved for designing or organizations. The metaphor of network / wired network provided the basis for creation and development of organizations. Since the organizations are now experiencing chaos, this paper argues for a new metaphor i.e. the metaphor of chaos, which deals with dissipative structures as a basis for organizations to operate in chaotic environment. A paradigm shift from managing pyramids to managing dissipative structures, which results in radical change management, is being emphasized in this paper.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Towards A New Development Vision', Southern Economist, Vol.41, No.1, May 1, 2002, pp.39-44: To survive, succeed and thrive in a competitive era is a new challenge for which a new vision is required. For any development vision, a conceptual framework is required. In this article, five inter-related models are presented to articulate the new vision, viz. Development Matrix for Development Agenda, Development STEPS (Social, Technological, Economic, Political & Spiritual), HOPE (Higher Order Purpose of Existence) Model, From Strength to Strategy Model and Rediscovery of India: Revitalizing the Nation. These five models are integrated together to articulate a holistic development vision.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Knowledge Generation Windows, Grounded Praxis and the TASK Learning Model: Knowledge Management and Learning Models in Knowledge Organizations', Abhigyan, Vol.20, No.2, April-June 2002, pp.7-15: With the advent of 'new economy', a new paradigm of management is emerging. While, the concept of Total Quality Management (TQM) belonged to the brick and mortar economy, the idea of Total Knowledge Management (TKM) belongs to the 'new economy' and the high tech era. A transition from TQM to TKM has already occurred with the recognition of 'knowledge' as an important asset of organization. The focus of new age management thinking is on knowledge, knowledge leadership and knowledge workers. It is in this context, the ideas of knowledge generation windows, 'grounded praxis' and the TASK learning model acquire importance.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Character Competence of the Corporation', Journal of Human Values, Vol.8, No.2, July-December 2002, pp.107-118: Prahalad and Hamel (1990) popularized the idea of core competence. However, even more important than core competence is the idea of character competence. The differences between the core competence and character competence are like difference between skills and ethics e.g. Microsoft is known for its core competence but what about its character competence. Its monopolistic tendencies are indicative of its low score on character competence. While corporates pay lot of attention to core competence, they hardly pay much attention to character competence. It may be indicated that the need for e-business (ethical business) in the era of e-business or e-commerce has become more urgent, because e-technology has opened new scope for many new unethical practices. In this paper, author argues that only by lifting the corporate veil, the character competence of the corporation could be known.

Subhashitas deal with not only the practical aspects of life but also with the philosophical perspectives of human existence. In this paper, the definition of the expression Subhashitas is extended to the 'received wisdom' contained in catch-phrases not only in the Sanskrit language but also in other languages. This paper is divided into four parts. In part-I, some selected Sanskrit Subhashitas that have relevance for management, administration and leadership principles has been presented. Ideas from the common pool of wisdom available in our proverbs, folklore literature and other Indian knowledge sources and resources representing the subaltern creativity and influence of the folkways is presented in part-II. Part-II is presented with some phrases and meaningful dialogues from the Indian cinema to demonstrate the all-pervasive extensions of Subhashitani and subaltern expressions in various ways and forms. In part-IV of the paper, some lessons from Subhashitas, folkways and cinematic influences for converting the 'empirical intelligence' and 'received wisdom' into 'received knowledge' of management theory and practice, are presented.

Taking cognizance of these models and the Indian model of Corporate Development, rooted in the ideas of human welfare and ethical profits, author suggests a new model viz. Corporate Rishi Model, wherein Rishi leadership is defined in terms of leader's ability to Re-see the things, events and actions around him or her in new perspectives. As illustrations of this model, author mentions the examples of Narayanmurthy and Premji who are considered by many as 'Corporate Rishis' because of their high standards of ethical leadership.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Markets, State and Society in the New Age: Towards Holistic Development and Management', Southern Economist, Vol.41. No.17, January 1, 2003, pp.9-12: This paper is divided into two parts. In part-I, a typology of markets taking into cognizance the emergence of future markets and cyber markets as a dominance phenomenon and as a means of wealth generation in today's world, is presented. In part-II, a need for a new vision based on balancing between the market values and the social values is suggested, which in turn leads towards the concept of holistic development and management.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Towards A Holistic Vision of Development', Southern Economist, Vol.41, No.20, February 15, 2003, pp.9-11: Paper presents a holistic view of development and role of corporates within the perspective of a holistic view. The holistic view suggests a convergence of the various 'arrows of development' represented by corporate development, institutional development, entrepreneurship and grassroots development. In knowledge economy, knowledge is the driving force. Accordingly, the paper presents a model of knowledge economy in the form of K*LCM wherein K denotes knowledge, and L, C, M denote Labour, Capital and Management. The symbol * is indicative of the multiplier effect or the leverage impact that Knowledge (K) factor provides to the other factors.
  • Sharma, Subhash, '3T Model of Management and Leadership: Towards Holistic Management Approach', Management Perception, January - June 2003, Vol.5, No.1, pp.50-56: The paper conceptualizes the ‘3T Model of Management and Leadership’ revolving around the three approaches to human affairs viz., transactional approach, transformational approach and transcendental approach. The model puts forward a generic framework which can be effectively applied to different aspects of life, work and human existence. While observing the existence of ‘transactional’ and ‘transformational’ leadership cultures in organizations and society, the paper draws upon the current trend of management thought moving towards the ‘transcendental’ form of management and leadership. Accordingly, the paper advances to apply the 3T model for personality analysis, work motivation and communication.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Towards Corporate VEDA: Indian Ethos and Corporate Development', Journal of Human Values, July - December 2003, Vol.9, No.2, pp.163-172: This paper suggests the metaphor of 'Veda' as a foundation for creating new knowledge for corporate development. Paper suggests the need for a new integration of Western Management, Japanese Management and Indian Management concepts to evolve new management concepts suitable to the new knowledge era in which modern organizations are now operating.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Towards Increasing Per Capita Happiness: Beyond the Western Models of Self-Development', in Conference Proceedings of the 14th Shankara Darshana Management Conference on 'Shaastraas for Shaanti (Scriptures for Peace)', organized by Sri Sringeri Sharada Institute of Management, New Delhi in collaboration with Meenakshi College for Women, held at Chennai, December 6, 2003: Drawing upon new age ideas, paper takes us beyond the Western models such as Kohlberg's moral development model etc., paper suggests three levels of struggles viz. struggle for existence, struggle for betterment and struggle for values. It also identifies three stages of existence viz. competition, co-operation and symbiosis. These ideas constitute the foundation for new models of self-development that take us beyond the Western models. These models help in stress management and creating work place happiness.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Human Quality Development (HQD) Models: Implications for Leadership and Corporate Management', in 'Developing Leaders, Teams and Organizations', edited by Anup K Singh & Daisy Chauhan, Excel Books, 2003, New Delhi, pp.137-154: The usage of the expression ‘resource’ in Human Resource Development (HRD) has been a subject of introspection as well as questioning. ‘Resource’ has both a positive as well as a negative connotation. It is often said that the expression ’resource’ tends to demean the human beings as they are put at par with the raw material and other inanimate resources. Resource also implies that human beings are merely a factor of production, the traditional view of economists. This view needs a change, as human beings are co-creators of wealth rather than merely a ‘factor of production’. The new idea leads us to the idea of Human Quality Development (HQD) as a foundational premise to improve the work place environment and to improve the quality of product and services. This paper presents conceptual models of HQD that are useful not only at the individual level but also for the social and organizational contexts.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Western Enlightenment and Eastern Awakening: Towards a Holistic Character', International Journal of Human Resources Development and Management, 2003, Vol.3, No.1, pp.39-48: In its desire to achieve progress Enlightenment has been the key Western approach whereas the East has preferred to highlight the aspects of Awakening for the progress of mankind. A journey from Enlightenment to Awakening could be construed as that of matter to consciousness. Building a holistic character would imply a synthesis between the two. A corporate world that wants to achieve the height of excellence and yet maintain and preserve harmony among social segments needs to identify new approaches. Enlightenment united with the spirit of Awakening would infuse in individuals and corporations the elements of holistic character-competence. This paper traces the roots of holistic approaches through the symbiosis of Western Enlightenment and Eastern Awakening.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Organization Development & Management (ODM): Five Forms of Capital as Holistic Development Framework', in 'Strategic Human Resources Management', edited by S.K.Prasad, Siraj Ur Rahman & G.Pandu Naik, Institute of HRD, Bangalore, 2003, pp.3-11: The paper while identifying the four strong forces of development viz., corporate development, institution development, entrepreneurship development and grassroots development, which need to flow in harmony for holistic development, identifies the four supporting forces viz., enlightened leadership, technology, management and information technology, that drive the above arrows of development. The author while taking note of the fact that these forces exist in abundance in the country, identifies a need for synchronization among these forces. The ‘Organization Development and Management’ (ODM) model encompasses five forms of capital viz., physical capital, human capital, knowledge capital, social capital and spiritual capital. Accordingly, based on these factors, the paper advances to put forward a new ranking mechanism of development, which besides altering the fundamental definition looks beyond the present ‘human development index’ and suggests ‘holistic development index’. Further, the paper proceeds to apply the ODM model for corporates in order to create new benchmarks of excellence. The paper while identifying the emergence of a new model in the contemporary knowledge era notes the need for modern day managers to adopt to the new model.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'New Corporate Model in the Era of Holistic Vision: Towards the Concepts of Total Values Chain and the Value Chain Matrix', Chinmaya Management Review, Vol.4, No.1, January 2004, pp.6-11: Corporate have come to acquire a dominant role in the society, influencing the interactions between individuals, organizations and society. For a holistic vision of development, a new conceptual framework distinct from socialistic and capitalistic vision is needed. While socialistic vision was a ‘political vision’ with emphasis on distribution of wealth without caring much for wealth generation, the capitalistic vision was an ‘economic vision’ aimed at wealth generation. However, wealth generation was largely self oriented and for selfish ends. In holistic vision, the emphasis is on wealth generation with values. Thus, holistic vision is a ‘managerial and ethical vision’ of the world. Rooted in this paradigm, this paper suggests a 3H framework of holistic development represented by H1: Happy Individuals, H2: Holistic Corporate Management, H3: Harmonic Society. Accordingly, the paper explores the processes of ‘wealth generation with values’ and develops the concepts of ‘Total Values Chain’ and ’Values Chain Matrix’ rooted in the 3H vision of holistic development of the society as a foundational basis for the new corporate model.

The several explanations offered for the nature of reality by both the earliest Greek thinkers, the Pre-Socratics and the Vedic rishis correspond with each other recalling the fact that people of kindred cultured and civilizations such as the Greeks and the Indians, were in possession of similar ideas and beliefs. This was mainly due to their close political, social and cultural relations and most conspicuously the fusion of Hindu religious traditions in to Greek thought. The search for reality is one such idea that attracted the minds of both the Greeks and the Indians. Referred to, in the present study as the Rishi Route to reality, this search was a rational enterprise that involved concentration on and concentration of the ultimate source from which all things originated and returned to. Paper explores the implications of the Rishi route for managerial contexts.

It provides a historical perspective of changes in terms of the metaphor of 'Manu to Markets' transition in Indian society.
  • Sharma, Subhash, 'Unfolding of a Holistic Vision of the World: Towards New Directions for Development of Management Thought', Global Business Review, Vol.5, No.2, July - December 2004, pp.161-170: Management thought has been largely rooted in the capitalistic vision of society. A correction in the capitalistic vision was introduced through the notion of ‘sustainable development’. Now the need to move towards holistic development paradigm is being felt. In the holistic vision, spiritual and ethical concerns are given due considerations in addition to the efficiency and equity. This vision could be referred to as MS (Material-Spiritual) vision where an integral and integrative view of life is taken through an unfolding of the material and spiritual dimension of life. While the two views have been unfolding as independent paths, the need for their convergence is being felt to achieve a balance between ‘per capita income’ and ‘per capita happiness’. In capitalistic vision, business organizations are viewed as ‘economic entities’. In contrast, the holistic vision considers business as ‘sacro-economic entities’. Thus holistic vision takes us in the direction of sacro-civic society and an ecotarian view of the world. Paper also explores the implications of the holistic vision for the future development of management thought and suggests three fundamental equations of holistic development to convert holistic vision into reality.
  • Subhash Sharma, 'Towards Consumers' Enlightened Leadership: An Analytical Framework for Consumer Activism', Synergy, Journal of Management, January 2003 – December 2004, Vol.6, Nos. 1 & 2, pp.32-36: The concept of consumers' enlightened leadership is based on the intellectual foundations of the concept of consumer movement. It encompasses in itself, an individual's self-responsibility towards better living in a better world. Creation of a better world is a direct consequence of sense of self-responsibility. Self-interest without self-responsibility amounts to disastrous consequences as is evident from the conditions prevailing in today's world. Consumers' enlightened leadership aims at correcting such imbalance by awakening the self-responsibility. The article presents a framework which can provide a conceptual foundation for analysis of such relationship for co-creation. This framework also provides us a basis for articulating the situation in which consumer action is called for.

The focus is on presenting the Vedantic thought as foundational premise for a new integration and synthesis of various religions as well as integration of science and spirituality. An understanding of this process of integration provides an approach to the study of motivation at human level. It is founded upon the symbiotic trend of science and spirituality and the confluence of philosophical thought from Western and Eastern sources, ancient and modern. To put Vedanta into practice, three approaches to solve managerial, organizational and social problems are suggested.
  • Subhash Sharma, 'Paradigms of Development: Implications for Management Thought and Social Discourse', in 'Managing in a Global Economy: Emerging Challenges to Management Profession', Conference Proceedings, organized by Association of Indian Management Scholars (AIMS) International, held at IIM Calcutta, December 28-31, 2004: Rooted in a typology of values in terms of market values, social values and spiritual values, three paradigms of development viz. economic development, sustainable development and holistic development are presented in this paper. While the concept of economic development is rooted in market values, the concept of sustainable development includes social concerns such as environmental concerns and equity considerations. Holistic development gives consideration to spiritual values in addition to social concerns. It aims at achieving a balance between market values, social values and spiritual values represented by competition, co-operation and symbiosis views of human existence and human nature. Drawing upon these paradigms, paper suggest the RICH (Resources, Income, Consumption, Happiness) model to achieve a balance between 'per capita income' and 'per capita happiness'. In addition, the concept of Wholistic Development Index (WDI) is proposed to take us beyond Human Development Index (HDI). It is suggested that ranking of nations can be reworked on the basis of Wholistic Development Index, as this index suggests negative marking for all pain inducing activities in the society. Paper proposes a holistic vision on the basis of 3H framework represented by H1: Happy Individual, H2: Holistic Corporate Management, H3: Harmonic Society. This holistic vision is based on integration of three paradigms of development presented in this paper.

Paper also suggests the need for paradigm shift from conflict models of society to co-operation and harmony oriented worldviews. It suggests that for creation of sacro-civic society we need a new blend of capitalism, socialism and spiritualism to achieve the goals of prosperity, equity and spirituality.
  • Subhash Sharma, 'Towards Holistic Development & Management (HDM)', in 'Governance for Sustainable Development', J.S.Ahluwallia & Uma Mehra (eds.), World Environment Foundation, London, 2005, pp.92-99: There are essentially three paradigms of development viz. economic development, sustainable development and holistic development. The paradigm of economic development is rooted in the pcs (profit, competition and self-interest) mode of thinking. In contrast the paradigm of sustainable development takes us beyond the pcs T-A (Thought – Action) mode, by including the environmental considerations as an essential element in policy making and corporate decision making. The new and emerging paradigm of Holistic Development & Management (HDM), takes us one step beyond the sustainable development concept by incorporating the ethical and spiritual dimensions of life as part of policy making and decision making processes. The three paradigms have three underlying models and visions of individuals, society and the global village. The main objective of Holistic Development & Management (HDM) is to create 'sacro-civic' society, wherein there is reconciliation of 'man with man and man with nature'. This paper explores the ways in which such a reconciliation can be achieved by changing T-A (Thought – Action) modes at the individual, society and policy making levels. In the new T-A mode, enlightened collective interest or 'loksangraha' becomes the basis for developing the sacro-civic society and its various institutions including corporates. Is it an utopia? Can it be realized through the concept of Holistic Development and Management? In the subsequent discussion we explore this idea.

Also published in Chinmaya Management Review, Vol.6, No.2, August 2004, pp.13-18: This paper speculates convergence of science and spirituality through unfolding of universal spiritual consciousness in terms of STEM (Space Time Energy Matter) wherein 'spacetime' and 'energy matter' are integrated together as a single 'variable', 'STEM' with its origin in USC and a latter split in terms of space, time, energy and matter. Paper suggests this unfolding process leading to an alternative perspective on evolution theory.

The paper elaborates on the concept and nature of the three quantum states of mind, their correspondence to the body, mind and spirit and considers the relation of extra-ordinary perception to cosmic consciousness.
  • Subhash Sharma, 'A Vedic Integration of Transitions in Management Thought: Towards Transcendental Management', Gurukul Business Review, Vol.1, Spring 2005, pp.4-12: The concept of 'management' has been changing over a period of time. During ancient times, 'management' was an art and a state craft. With the advent of industrial revolution, 'management' became 'science' and an art was transformed into 'science'. Subsequently, 'management' became a discipline and a profession that could be formally taught to all those who are interested in becoming managers. In this discipline, we find convergence of various other disciplines such as economics, psychology, sociology, ethics etc. The 'core knowledge' of the discipline of management draws heavily from other disciplines and through value addition, integration and synthesis of ideas from various disciplines, a new discipline of 'management' has been created with its own concepts at the levels of thought, discourse and action. This paper provides a Vedic integration of transitions in management thought from ancient times to modern times by providing a Vedic integration of various intellectual traditions that have influenced the development of management ideas and concepts. Further, the paper provides some integrative models of 'transcendental management' and suggests the need to create an intellectual bridge between the 'Harvard' and ''Haridwar' metaphorically representing the concepts of corporate management and self-management.

It suggests a new leadership grid referred to as KT grid wherein K is indicative of Theory K and T is indicative of Theory T of leadership. Paper locates various Indian models suggested by Indian scholars within the framework of KT grid and suggests the need for empirical testing of this grid.
  • Subhash Sharma, 'Human Quality Development (HQD) for Corporate Management', Vilakshan, Vol.2, No.1, March 2005, pp.22-36: The concept of Human Resource Development is rooted in the worldview of humans as factors of production and as assets for organizations. It is largely rooted in the 'skills' oriented view of the organizations. Chakraborty (1990) emphasized the need for inclusion of 'values' view along with the skills. Hence, he suggested the idea of 'Human Response Development' by exploring the application of transformational values at the workplace. Sharma (1996) suggested the need to move beyond the narrow definition of humans as factors of production to a broader definition of humans as a set of human qualities. He suggested the need for Human Quality Development (HQD) in individual, social and organizational contexts. Thus, the paper suggests that there is three complementing worldviews about human beings viz. Human Resource, Human Response and Human Quality Development.
  • Subhash Sharma, 'Management Thought, Social Discourse and Management Education: Towards Developing Holistic Professionals', Indian Journal of Training & Development, April-June 2005, Vol.35, No.2, pp.5-12: During recent years there has been a transition from language of 'isms' to the language of values. The new language of values finds its expression in three paradigms of development viz. economic development, sustainable development and holistic development. These three paradigms are linked with 'Total Values Chain' concept wherein market values, social values and spiritual values constitute three important components of the values chain. Market values are represented by profit, competition and self-interest (pcs) worldview of life. Management thought is largely rooted in this worldview. These values also constitute the foundational premise of management education. There is a need to expand the horizons of management thought and management education by including social discourse as an important element of the thought process. This implies the need for developing holistic professionals embedded in a new vision of a new harmony through a new blending and balancing between utilitarian, egalitarian and ethicotarian worldviews of life, society and its organizations.
  • Subhash Sharma, 'Three Roads to Development: A Framework for Society's Growth, Development & Progress (GDP)', Southern Economist, July 15, 2005, Vol.44, No.6, pp.7-10: The focus of globalization policies has been largely on the corporate road to development. This is also reflected in policy making at the Government level. Unless, we recognize the complementarity and inter-connectivity of the three roads, holistic development would not take place. For society's growth, development and progress, all the three roads to development should be properly developed. Paper suggests that for development of the three roads, it should take place within the overall framework of 'Panchmukhi Vikas' model.
  • Subhash Sharma, 'A Brief History of History: Some Models of History and Lessons for Leadership and Management', Journal of Human Values, Vol.11, No.2, July-December 2005, pp.123-137: Taking a managerial perspective, this article presents some models of history with a view to draw lessons for leadership and management of organizations and institutions. The suggested models include: evolution of human thought in terms of religions, science and spirituality and their convergence; transitions in society from kingdom–state to nation-state to corporates as state and beyond; creativity view of history; dignity struggle and liberation view of history; 'fall of the fittest' view of history, and the swastika analysis of history. The article explores the implications of these models for providing enlightened leadership to organizations and society by creating synergy between influences from the West and the East.
  • Subhash Sharma, 'Transforming Mind for True Leadership: Leading Through the Intrinsic', in 'Global Leadership Conference, Conference Proceedings, organized by Strategic Management Technology Consultants (SMT), held at IIM Calcutta, September 20-21, 2005: This paper presents the framework of quantum states of mind and four forces model of society's mind. It suggests three quantum states in terms of Division, D-vision and Direct-vision. Paper provides number of illustrations for these three mind caps for decision making, problem solving and perspective development. Model of four forces identifies fundamental forces in terms of force of market, force of State, force of people and force of self. This model suggests the need for holistic globalization wherein there is a synergy between these four forces leading to emergence of sacro-civic society and sacro-civic nations. Paper explores the implications of these forces for management thought and suggests that a change has been taking place from industrial revolution to knowledge revolution to transcendental revolution. Accordingly, paper expands the idea of transcendental management wherein a touch of transcendence is imported to all the activities in organization and social contexts. In corporate context, there is a need for CEOs to become 'Corporate Rishi' to provide transcendental touch to all corporate activities with a view to make corporates enlightened citizens of the world.
  • Subhash Sharma, 'A Model for Corporate Development – A Holistic Approach', Vilakshan, XIMB Journal of Management, Vol.2, No.2, September 2005, pp.71-78: Since its advent within the framework of maximization of shareholders wealth, the corporate model has been undergoing a series of transformations. In its next evolutionary step, the concept of multiple stakeholders emerged. As corporates are playing a dominant role in the society, the idea of corporate citizenship has been emerging during recent years. This paper suggests a new age corporate model, rooted in the social discourse and the holistic vision of development. While 'core competence' allows a corporate to be competitive, new age corporates need to include other dimensions in their corporate activities. Social concern and 'innovation competence' among others are the additional requirements. Further, it also needs to have character competence, then only it would be able to lead others. In fact, corporate governance has already emerged as an important concern for the corporates. This paper also presents the evolution of corporate model from its shareholder framework to corporate citizen framework and relates this evolution to the nature of social discourse in the market economy. Using ideas from Indian thought it formulates the corporate HOPE model and suggests a 'new age score carding' mechanism to evaluate corporate performance from a holistic perspective.
